Today’s Message from Dereck
Where I draw my strength from – the secret place
My secret place is a place where I can venture, it’s a spiritual place where I draw my strength from. Everyone draws their strength from something or someone, everyone is encouraged by someone or something. In 1 Samuel 30:1-20 David and the men he was fighting with hit rock bottom. They wept until they had no more strength to weep. They thought they were at the end of the road and there was no way out. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord our God – he went to his secret place. It was just him at a dark time in his life.
Many of my dark times have been self-inflicted but life can always throw things at you like it did to these guys. They had to run away, become outlaws because they had a corrupt king. Feeling like a reject makes you pick up the spirit of rejection and rejection makes you bitter and unforgiving and this will keep driving you back to your old unhealthy coping mechanisms. Unless you get rid of them. When you’re down in your dark place don’t react to feelings and emotions, you need to go to your secret place, to the depths of your being and the depths of your being will cry out to your Creator.
Life was tough for David and life is tough now for us. All the earth’s waiting for a revelation of God. The love of money has become the root of all evil. There’s corruption everywhere. So where do you draw your strength from? This is the question you have to ask yourself.
It broke something inside me when I saw my father crying about me doing what I was doing, it didn’t stop me though but it left me with an impression. You need to know how life is in a fallen world. The world programmes you a certain way, cultures have norms and standards – ways they operate.
Renew your mind, swim upstream against the way of the world that brings no real sustainable joy. Renew your mind to the point where you can love your neighbour. We must strengthen ourselves in the right things. We don’t do this through drugs and alcohol – they only make us zone out and it’s not sustainable. It’s very important that you know and understand where you draw your strength from. David knew his strength was from his Life Source, he knew God, he spoke to Him, he sang to Him and played music for Him. But there were other times that David’s struggles are evident in the Psalms and that’s what life’s like. That’s why you can’t allow your feelings to govern you. When David was in his dark place, he obeyed God.
So, the question this morning is is where are you drawing your strength from? Is it a person, relationships, freedom, religion, your intellect, money, looks etc. (i.e. from what the world has to offer)? I draw my strength from Yaweh.
I was in a dark place at the height of my addiction and something said to me that I was born for far more than this. And then I started to look to God to draw strength from. Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and our strength.
In closing, the Word of God never changes, it says in Isaiah 40:20 The Lord’s the everlasting God, He never grows weak or weary. So, if you want to get power and draw strength draw it from God. Isaiah 40:29: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” And Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.”
